XXLarge transport through lower saxony
At the beginning of the year Nurminen Logistics and the Kübler Spedition GmbH was commissioned to transport a cylinder manufactured in Sweden with the dimensions 7.70 x 6.52 x 6.62 and 138.2 tonnes in the Sappi paper mill to Alfeld. That this would be no easy task, was immediately clear all those involved. After days of searching around Alfeld, various route options were developed from existing water connections on the Mittelland Canal and the corresponding Stichkanälen to the delivery to the plant of Sappi GmbH.
However, large sections of the various routes were not approved by the authorities as a result of infrastructural conditions so that now a new solution had to be found.
Thus arose the plan to try the delivery of the cylinder over the Weser and to find a suitable route from there. The Weser is a challenge especially for parts with large dimensions, since here in the summer with very little water. Also a transhipment place had to be found, which allows the transport from there with a total weight of 250 tonnes on the road making. Existing premises with sufficient infrastructural measures were not available, as in the rest of the transport either bridges and road sections were not strong or high enough.
So, only the ferry terminal at Grohnde came into question. To achieve this, the cylinder had to be transported first in a very shallow special vessel to the powerplant Emmerthal, where he then had to be reloaded on a very short special pontoon. The transhipment of the heavy-lift ship on the pontoon was performed with a LG 1550. Were first the axes on the available, short pontoon loaded and then placed the cylinder on this.
It was only possible to realize the roll off with the short pontoon. At this point, the Weser has a width of 80 meters. The length of the pontoon was 40 metres. By the oblique intention, the pressure by the water could be reduced thus by the Weser on the pontoon.
The pontoon was fixed with the help of mobile mooring points of the Bundeswehr to ensure a secure hold for the operation.
The inclination of the load had to be monitored throughout the duration of the transport. Due to their construction the Centre of gravity of the load was about 4 meter. To avoid tipping, therefore the inclination was constantly monitored and if necessary, corrected. Once rose the value of 4 degrees cargo was restored by means of hydraulic balance, before the transport further rolled.
For transport, the clearance of trees had to be adapted in some places in advance. After consultation, on-site visits out this work was carried out by two expert tree care companies with competence and the authorities granted the permission to the pruning. For safety one team of tree cutter been traveld with the transport while a second one has controlled the respective transport route directly to the next day and carried out necessary measures.
The ferry dock in Grohnde can be reached only through a tree-lined avenue. To safe this tree-lined avenue, an approx. 500 meter-long makeshift road was paved in the adjacent field. Following the successful roll off and supervision by police and TÜV the transport could start the next day about the makeshift road for the first 15 km.
Because of small curves on the first phase of the transport the cylinder was on a 12 axle platform trailer transported. Just so, the bottlenecks in the villages of Frenke and Hall could be passed through. In Frenke, a gutter has been dismantled in advance, as here, only a few inches remained for the transport.
After about 6 hours’ drive the transport reached the car park on the B 240 and the transport train and was extended by 8 axles up to 20 axles in the trailer.
After an approximately 24-hour break, the transport continued on Wednesday evening from 20:00. The next stage was a parking lot northeast of Alfeld on the B3. In particular the passage of Eschershausen and the transit of a road work site in Wenzen were challenging in this section.
At the road works were about 600 tons of gravel filled for this night only, to allow the passage. After a long night of transport the cylinder stopped finished near the town of Alfeld in the morning at 6: 00am
In the final stage of the night, the Leine in Gronau was to cross and then the transport could take direct course to the factory in Alfeld. In the run-up to the bridge of crossing the Leine in Gronau it has been statically verified and it was found that the bridge will withstand the passage of the truck. The last bottleneck in Brüggen had to be tackled Here, the truck on both sides had only 5 cm square. Further more the switchbacks at Wettensen were mastered carefully and with permanent control of slope, so that the truck arrived at the destination in Alfeld already at 1:30.
